Kitchen Design No-nos
2025 kitchen design no-nos—what not to include in a modern kitchen.
What is in and what is out…and what design trend we never want to make a comeback??
*Patterned Splashback Tiles
Less is more seems to be the popular saying now, meaning clean lines and less clutter, so that extends to the kitchen splashback…neutral tones, subtle textures, and materials that blend rather than shout. Your splashback should complement your kitchen, not compete with it.
*Open Shelving
Personally I love open shelves in the pantry or on either side of the rangehood- but what about dust and clutter?…I think the jury is out on this one- in my book Open Shelving is still on trend. They add character and accessibility. The verdict: open shelving is still hanging on, but only if styled with intention (and cleaned regularly!).
*Glossy Cabinets
10 years ago, shiny black timber cabinets were the “in thing”, even red or blue cabinets were a feature of a kitchen- but now they are definitely not in vogue. ..think of the endless clean ups with fingerprints!..glossy cabinets have given way to Matt muted finishes or panelled cupboard doors that add character.
*Industrial
Is the Ultra Industrial Look still in? Metallic cupboards with concrete benchtops and black tapware. While a touch of industrial flair can still work, the full-blown factory aesthetic is fading. Homeowners are leaning toward white stone benchtops, timber accents, and organic materials that feel more inviting and timeless.
AND the one design trend that might have had it’s day??-Glass Splashbacks…sorry to anyone I might offend, but red, blue or silver or even pictured glass splashbacks have had their day and severely date a kitchen-Sure, they’re easy to clean, but the vibe is pure 90s.
Design is personal, but trends offer a helpful guidepost. If you're building in 2025, you may want to steer clear of these dated choices and embrace the new wave of calm, curated, and clutter-free kitchens. Your future self will thank you(personal opinion only)
