My top bathroom tips

While new carpet and a coat of paint can completely change a bedroom, bathrooms (like kitchens) are one of those rooms that can’t be changed as easily. So it’s important to consider all the options in the planning stages.

I’m sharing a few of my top tips for bathroom selections below:

Wall-hung vanity or freestanding vanity?

Wall-hung vanities are very on trend. They look clean and slimline and very modern - with or without handles. They can, however be a little tricky to clean underneath.

Freestanding or floor mounted vanities are great for storage and no need to worry about getting down on your hand and knees to scrub underneath!

Shower niches

Shower niches are practical and can also be an attractive feature in your shower. Keep those products and bottles off the floor and within arm’s reach. Definitely something I’d recommend - how did we survive without them growing up!

Tiling

Check the tiling heights in your bathrooms - the builder will state what height the tiles will be. Floor to ceiling tiling is often an extra.

Having one wall in the shower tiled in a feature colour or feature pattern is a great way to add some interest and contrast in the room.

Waterfall shower head, shower on a rail, or 2-in-1 twin shower?

Waterfall showerheads look fantastic, but if you don’t want to get your hair wet, then showering can be challenging – invest in shower caps!

The standard shower rose on a rail is practical, but may not have a powerful spray.

Twin shower sets are great and give you the best of both worlds - the waterfall showerhead AND the handheld shower. The handheld component is also handy for cleaning shower screens.

Baths

Should you have a freestanding bath? They look amazing, but are not the most practical if you have kids - getting little ones in and out and cleaning behind them can be a bit tricky.

A standard bath – in-built with tiles around it - is more suitable for younger kids, giving you space to rest on at bath time.

Back-to-wall baths are a good compromise - they look like a freestanding bath and because they go to the wall, there is there is no issue with cleaning at the back.

Shower screens

A framed chrome shower screen is normally standard, but for a little extra you can upgrade to a black frame if all your tapware is black as well, giving you consistency and a hint of luxury the bathroom.

A frameless shower screen looks terrific and provides a seamless, contemporary feel. They are expensive however - around $3000 extra. Remember, no matter what type of shower screen you have you still have to clean them!
