5 Things I’d Do Differently If I Built My Home Again
Building a home is one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences — I should know because we have built 5 times …you would think I would have experience in what I exactly want in a home but here are the five things I’d change if we were to build again:
1. Install Shaving Cabinets in the Ensuite
Storage is gold, especially in bathrooms. We opted for a simple mirror above the vanity, but I now realise how valuable shaving cabinets would have been— and let’s be honest, there’s never enough cupboard space in a bathroom!
2. Design a Bigger Laundry with More Cupboards and Bench Space
Our laundry works, but it’s far from ideal. If I could do it again, I’d make it larger with plenty of overhead and under-bench cupboards, plus a long bench for folding and sorting. A functional laundry makes a huge difference in day-to-day life, especially for families.
3. Include a Butler’s Pantry
At the time, a butler’s pantry felt like a luxury we couldn’t afford — but now, I see it as a must-have. It’s perfect for keeping the kitchen clutter-free, hiding appliances, and having extra prep space when entertaining…well if you are a chief- which is not me!
4. Choose Different Tiles for the Alfresco
We went with very light tiles for our outdoor area, thinking they’d be low-maintenance. In reality, they show every speck of dirt, dust, and grime.
5. Add a Shower Ledge or a Larger Niche
Our shower niche is too small to be practical. If I could redesign it, I’d go for a niche at least 800mm x 1000mm — or better yet, a full-length shower ledge. It’s a simple upgrade that makes a big difference in functionality and aesthetics.
