Hooked on Hamptons-style homes

In Australia we’re often drawn to all things coastal. Especially when it comes to our homes. And who can blame us? What’s not to love about feeling like you’re on a summer holiday all year round! This is why Hamptons-style homes and interiors remain eternally popular and are a great choice when building a new home.

For starters, the colours are timeless: whites, greys, blues and greens. Not only are these hues calming, you can mix and match them throughout your home – from your cabinetry to your cushions - and they will all look cohesive.

Rather than a plain, flush door, kitchen and bathroom cupboards typically have a profile. Whilst this can mean a little extra cleaning, these shaker-style cabinets are a must with decorative edging on the island bench. Accompanied by statement pendant lights (whether they be silver, gold or black) you’ll be creating a kitchen with impact.

The buzz word at the moment (thanks to TV shows like The Block) is ‘sconces’. You will often find these lights on the walls of bathrooms and living areas in Hamptons-style homes. Especially nautical themed ones.

Timber flooring, particularly in a herringbone pattern is truly classic Hamptons. Continuing that pattern into the bathrooms also looks fabulous.  A shower feature wall or floor in a herringbone pattern contrasted against a brick bond (subway) style always looks beautiful.

Hamptons homes are all about scale and size. White or light grey walls, tall ceilings and ornate cornices create a sense of space and elegance. They’re also full of natural light with plenty of windows.

On a practical level, storage is one of the best features of this style. You will always find plenty of cupboards - whether it be in a mudroom to put all the school bags and jackets, overhead cupboards in the laundry, corner cupboards in a living room or a generous pantry in the kitchen.
