Knock knock!

The humble front door is no joke – in fact it’s actually an important part of the home. After all, it’s the feature that welcomes you every time you enter. It keeps you and your family secure, it keeps the elements out and can even help with energy efficiency.

When it comes to front doors, there are plenty of considerations such as size, material, style and finish.  And, if you’re building a custom home, compared to a standard project home on a tight budget, you have more options at your disposal for front door profiles and sizes.

Your front door reflects what style your home will be.  You should consider what size you would like the front door - will it be a standard 820mm width, 1200mm, or even over 2 metres to create a grand entrance. This decision will be influenced by the width of your home compared to the size of your block of land.

Would you like a texture to the door to add interest? A sectional door with clear or frosted glass to let in natural light? Or a solid core door for maximum security and energy efficiency? Will it be stained? Or painted a bright colour?

Sometimes bushfire requirements dictate what type of door you need to use and some larger doors may have to be custom made, adding to the cost.

A Hamptons style door is more decorative with edging and a more defined profile, whereas a modern look is more streamline and sleek with a vertical handle, adding to the minimal vibe.

Avoid ‘door disappointment’ - when talking to display home sales people, always ask what sort of front door you will be getting with your build price – be aware that the one on display is often not a standard inclusion.

But if your budget allows, I recommended investing in a great looking front door - it will stand the test of time and make you feel great every time you enter your home.
