Mudroom is the new buzz word

Mudrooms are now trending…as seen by the popularity of them on television shows like The Block, and I loved seeing how the contestants created gorgeous, yet functional spaces.

A mudroom is normally positioned near the garage, so you can go straight from the car to this room. Sometimes it is alongside the laundry. It’s a space where you can leave the mess and stress of the day behind - take off your shoes and store them in baskets or drawers, take off your coat and place it on coat hooks, the kids can leave their school bags on hooks too (on the proviso they remove their lunch boxes first!)…and anything else that you don’t want taken into the house can be stored on shelves, in cupboards or in drawers.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking they’re a boring, utilitarian room, though.  As you can see from the recent series of The Block, the finishes are amazing. From shaker style cabinetry with gold handles and gold mesh details, to flush cupboards with a timber seat and a textured wall for hooks, they’re simultaneously practical and pretty.  The colours don’t need to be boring either - on The Block we saw greens, blues, whites and blacks. You can coordinate with the colour palette throughout your home or have fun with it and add something a little unusual.

The mudroom is now becoming an essential part of the home, and I am receiving more and more requests for plans that include one. They offer convenience and organisation as well as adding value to the home.
