Will your colour selections stand the test of time?

Choosing colours is one of the most exciting parts of building your home - you get to create just how your bathroom and kitchen will look. Your vision comes to life!

You have poured through all the magazines in print and online and watched all the renovation shows and you think you have your colour palette all worked out…but will you still love the colours you have selected in a few years’ time?

All colours go in and out of fashion…think brass taps, brown tiles with hints of pink which were around in the 80’s and are now making a comeback. Greens were very popular in the 70’s and are also becoming fashionable again.

It is always good to consider the current trends for both textures and colours…but will you regret that feature dark wood island bench or the dark grey floor to ceiling tiled feature wall behind your bath.

One approach is to select more neutral colours - a more basic backdrop that you can add colours to as the years and fashions go by.

For example, an all-white kitchen is timeless. Pops of colour can be added with tea towels, toaster and the kettle which are so easy to update.

Likewise, a beautiful soft grey feature tile, rather than a dark grey, in the bathroom may date better. Your soap holder, towels and other decorative items can be easily changed to suit evolving trends.

The same goes for tapware - I find that chrome is a timeless option and there are plenty of chrome tap styles around. I love the black, gold and brass ranges, but will these date?

In the end, the most important thing is to walk into your house and love how it makes you feel. When picking colours, ask yourself if the colours of your kitchen and bathroom will stand the test of time – not only for potential buyers down the track, but when you look at it each day too!
