Get window-wise

When looking at your build design, it is always a good idea to consider the placement of your windows. They may seem like something you just see on a plan, but don’t give much more thought to, however there are some key questions to ask to help you save money and get the best outcome for your home.

For example, will they offer sufficient privacy? Will they let in the sun on a crisp winter’s day or too much sun in the height of summer? These last two considerations form part of BASIX - the Building Sustainability Index. This looks at the thermal comfort of the home, so the builder may have to change some windows to receive a pass on a BASIX assessment. This can be out of your control.

Another important factor is the shape and how you will use that particular room. If your windows are too long will you have enough space to place your furniture?  You may want to change some to a long horiztonal window instead of vertical so you can place your lounge under the window.

Windows are also a big part of the style of your home. Do you want decorative windows? Particularly if you are wanting a Hamptons-style home.

Fucntionality is, of course, the other main consideration. Do you want tinted windows, for example? Or wind-out instead of sliding?

All important questions to ask yourself when looking at your house design. It’s always a good idea to compare the windows on your plan to what you’re currently living with too.

Hot tip:  when looking at your build plan, the window dimensions will be noted as ‘Height’ by ‘Width’ (or as I like to remember it by: ‘Harry’ and ‘Wills’ 😂)
